Dhanishtha is the twenty-third nakshatra out of the 27 nakshatrs in Hindu Astrology. The number 23 is considered to be "The Royal Number" and is connected to the Lion or "King of Beasts". In Hindu astrology and Panchang, this nakshtra is considered very auspicious, especially to start something new or some new activities like as travel. It is said that when the moon is in Dhanishtha, it is the best period for auspicious events. Dhanishtha Nakshatra lies with the arenas of the Zodiac signs Makara or Capricorn and Kumbha or Aquarius.
Dhanishtha nakshatra is ruled by Mars or Mangal and there is not one but eight presiding deities of this nakshatra. The deities are the eight or Ashta Vasus - the solar Gods of energy and light. They are Agni, Varuna, Dyaus, Prithvi, Vayu, Surya, Chandramas and Dhruva. The supreme deity of all the Ashta Vasus is Lord Nataraja.
