Purva Bhadrapada is the twenty-fifth nakshatra in Vedic astrology. Its presiding deity is Brihaspati or the planet Jupiter. It is one of the third pairs of our twin nakshatras, its twin nakshatra being Uttara Bhadrapada. The Hindu deity for this Nakshatra is Aja Ekapada, which is actually a one-footed goat. The nakshatra represents mystery, supernaturalism and occult sciences. It also represents honesty, principles and benevolence. However, those who practice electional astrology consider Purva Bhadrapada as a Cruel nakshatra, the reason being activities that involve deception, wickedness, craftiness wickedness start when this nakshatra is in prominence. Thus, the nakshatra represents both positive and negative traits, the twin aspects of creation and destruction, benevolence and violence.

The translated meaning of this nakshatra is "The former one who possesses lucky feet"

Two-headed man or two legs of a bed or crossed swords: In the night sky, the stars that represent this nakshatra look like the front legs of a bed. Some says, it represents a funeral cot. Some considers the symbol to be crossed swords or two-headed man.
Animal symbol: The animal symbol of this nakshatra is a female lion in an "aggressively roaring" manner. Sometimes, this is misinterpreted as a male Lion which actually is the animal symbol for Dhanishta Nakshatra.
