Of all the 27 Nakshatras, Ashvini or Ashwini is the first nakshatra in Hindu vedic astrology. Ashvini plays an important role in making astrological calculations in vedic astrology. Its controlling planet is Ketu, the ruling deity of which is Lord Ganesha. The presiding deity of Ashvini is Ashwini Kumaras, the twins who are believed to be the physicians of the celestial Gods.
